Capital authorities pay a well-deserved tribute to the legendary Roberto Clemente

The Sandinista Government, through the Managua Mayor's Office in conjunction with the Alexis Argüello Sports Movement, paid tribute to National Hero Roberto Clemente in the Luis Alfonso Velásquez Flores Park.

Roberto Clemente, one of the most beloved athletes in Latin America, both in sport and for his service to human beings, at 51 years of his immortality, his legacy remains stronger than ever.

The legend of world sports died on the night of December 31, 1972, after the plane in which he was transporting humanitarian aid for the victims of the earthquake in Managua, fell into the sea a mile from the coast, after taking off from the airport in San Juan Puerto Rico.

During his 18 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Clemente achieved four batting titles and one Most Valuable Player award, after winning 12 Gold Gloves and being a star player in the Major Leagues 15 times.

Once again, the municipality remembers the great Roberto Clemente.
