Tribute to the families victims of the 1972 earthquake

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1972 earthquake, the Mayor's Office of the Citizen Power of Managua paid tribute to the more than 3,000 victims who lost their lives in this tragedy that devastated the Nicaraguan capital and who already rest in the General Cemetery, with the placement of floral offerings and a music concert by the Cabrerita Ensemble, on the morning of this Friday, December 23.

This act was attended by the Mayor of Managua, Reyna Rueda Alvarado, who recalled that fateful early morning when in a matter of seconds thousands of houses and buildings of the time fell to the ground, due to an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 on the Richter scale, to 00:35 am local time on Saturday, December 23, 1972, on the eve of Christmas.

"We remember with great affection and respect all those who suffered in that terrible earthquake, placing a flower with much love, more than 3,000 brothers rest in this area of the cemetery, we must remember so as not to forget our victims, now we have the result of what our Good Government has done with prevention, taking actions for any eventuality, the results have been positive, yesterday we had the 4th exercise to protect life, and families have evacuation routes, Managua is not the same, We are prepared and we commit ourselves as the Mayor's Office to continue accompanying the families and may God continue to protect us from any evil that may threaten our country,” said Rueda.

Clemente Guido, Director of Historical Heritage of the commune, shared that at that time there was no prevention plan, nor a preparation program for the population of Managua, by the authorities of the government on duty, in charge of Anastasio Somoza Debayle , "Today we remember this memory with hope, that 15 years ago we are building a new Managua, that the hope we had in 1973 of a new, rebuilt Managua, now we are living it with the municipal government in total harmony with the government of President Daniel and Compañera Rosario”.

During this second stage of the Revolution, the Sandinista Government has been transforming the city and has managed to build an attractive Managua, where the center of the capital that was destroyed has been rescued and has now been built with tourist places, entertainment, sports, artistic, which gives a privileged place to be visited, like the beautiful and creative Managua for everyone.
