Comuna pays tribute to Alexis Argüello and honors outstanding athletes

In an extraordinary session of the Honorable Council of Managua on June 30, the Municipal Order of Sports Excellence Alexis Argüello was awarded to professional soccer player Sheyla Guadalupe Flores, world boxing champions Félix and René Alvarado and former baseball player Calixto Varga, in commemoration to the 11th anniversary of his transition to another plane of life, of the Three-time World Champion and former Mayor of Mangua, Alexis Argüello Bohórquez

The Municipal Order was delivered by the Mayor of Managua, Reyna Rueda Alvarado, the Vice Mayor Enrique Armas and the Secretary of the Managua Council, Jennifer Porras.

During the event, Mayor Rueda said that this distinction is given as fair recognition of the achievements of these athletes.

“Eleven years after the physical departure, Alexis is more present than ever because every time we see young people like Sheyla, Félix, René and the experience of Don Calixto triumph, that motivates us and we are proud because they are a pride of our country ”, Highlighted the mayor of the capital.

Sheyla Guadalupe Flores, at 22 years old, has achieved more success than any player in the history of Nicaraguan soccer. First pineapple to play in two Central American leagues: El Salvador (he scored goals in one game) and Costa Rica, where he currently plays with Deportivo Saprissa. He holds the national record for the most goals scored in a season.

Similarly, René Alvarado was awarded the 130-pound Champion of the World Boxing Association and Felix his brother, the 108-pound monarch of the International Boxing Federation.

"I honestly thought that they only gave this award to those already retired from their careers, I did not expect that they would receive it so young," said the 108-pound monarch.

He also attributed the Alexis Argüello Order to Calixto Vargas, great hitter and leader of the National Teams of the 70s. He was the first thousand-hitter in first division baseball in Nicaragua. He retired in the early eighties playing for the Dantos de Managua. He is a member of the Nicaraguan Sports Hall of Fame. Today he is a sportscaster.

The athletes expressed their gratitude to the building authorities for the distinction awarded and expressed their love and appreciation for the Nicaraguan people; The Alexis Argüello Municipal Order of Sports Excellence, is granted by the Honorable Council of Managua to prominent personalities in the different sports disciplines, nationally and internationally.
