Mayor's Office commemorates 88 years of the 1931 earthquake in Managua

In commemoration of the 88th anniversary of the 1931 earthquake in Managua, the capital city imposed floral offerings to the monument of the victims, where it held a special ceremony to pay tribute to those killed by this seismic event that destroyed the infrastructure of the Nicaraguan capital at that time. .

The floral offerings were imposed by Mayor Reyna Rueda Alvarado and Vice Mayor Enrique Armas Rosales, who recalled the testimonies of the survivors of that earthquake that destroyed the capital and highlighted the tenacity of the citizens of the capital to rise again in the face of disasters and now even more. with the support of the Good Government, which has built public infrastructure and improved the conditions of the capital's families.

This event was attended by 2 survivors of that earthquake, Mrs. María del Carmen Reyes, born in 1915 and aged 104, who in her few words recalled the tragedy that caused much pain to the Nicaraguan people; Likewise, Mrs. Matilde Sobalvarro Gadea, 98 years old, recalled that she was 10 years old and remembers when the house where she lived fell and when they were taken under the rubble together with other children who went to shelter in a property where today the Legal Medicine building is located.

This earthquake occurred on Holy Tuesday, March 31, 1931, at 10:22 in the morning, with a magnitude of 6 degrees on the Richter scale, which destroyed the city at that time, causing 2 thousand injuries and an approximate of 1 thousand 200 deceased.
